All Change at the DfE

Gavin Williamson has been appointed Secretary of State for Education in Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s new cabinet. He replaces Damien Hinds and will be the 5th Education Secretary in a just over 5 years.

Gavin Williamson was previously Secretary of State for Defence and has also served as Chief Whip.

State school educated, married to a former teacher and having served as both a county councillor and school governor – he is known to be a strong supporter of the government’s academy programme.

As Secretary of State he is responsible for the entire work of the Department of Education including the ongoing implementation of the department’s new teacher recruitment and retention strategy. He will also be responsible for confirming this year’s teachers pay award following the end of the current consultation period in September.
