Time to Talk Day

This Thursday, 7th February, is Time to Talk Day.

Mental health problems affect one in four of us, yet people are often afraid to talk about it.  Time to Talk Day encourages everyone to talk about mental health.

Talking about mental health is not always easy -  but these tips may help you start a conversation:

  • Reach out – ask how he or she is doing using open questions
  • Give the person time to explain how they are feeling and listen without judging
  • Think about the right time and place – consider when might be the best time to reach out
  • Try to resist the natural tendency to offer quick fixes.  Just talking can be really powerful so unless the person asks for advice, it might be best just to listen
  • Be patient some people may not be ready to talk about what they are going through. Let them know that you will always be willing to chat if they want to
